about

I love Joseph's work, which is primarily improvised percussion. Joseph sent me this track about 3.5 years ago when I expressed an interest in collaborating. A collaboration can be challenging, especially when the participants make such different kinds of music. Or maybe they just seem different.... Anyway, after leaving it on the shelf for a while (and feeling guilty about it), I finally came up with an approach a couple of days ago, and here's the result.

All the playing is Joseph's. I took his recording and time-stretched it (using the Paulstretch program) to 10x the original length, and then used the same software to shorten it back into the original length. This produced a result that essentially "smears" the attacks and transients into a series of sustained sounds. Then I combined the stretched-and-shortened track with the original track in Reaper and applied the following plugins: Audio Thing/Hainbach Gong Amp (resonator), Eventide Blackhole (reverb), and Izotope Ozone 9 (mastering).

Please check out Joseph's Bandcamp site, which is full of great stuff: josephbenzola.bandcamp.com.
