about

A bit over three hours of slowly shifting chords, modulating between sonorities. This was originally conceived as a single VERY long track, but that proved to be impractical given Bandcamp's limits on file size. Perhaps it's better this way. I hope this music can provide some measure of peace and serenity in the midst of this long period of isolation, worry, and tragedy.

Tuning Notes
==========

Each chord is built up from a different six-note hexany scale, all or which are derived from a single structure called an eikosany, a twenty-note microtonal scale. There are thirty hexanies embedded in every eikosany. The hexanies are ordered here so that there is at least one common tone from one scale to the next, for smooth modulation.

Each section of the piece is made from a series of five hexanies, and each section picks up the sequence where the previous one leaves off.

Another way of presenting these same chords, in the same sequence, but played as blocks: soundcloud.com/mysterybear/hexany-cycle

An early prototype of this piece, using only the first four chords and with a somewhat different patch: soundcloud.com/mysterybear/ophanim

Gear Notes
=========

All sounds in this piece originate from a Csound program running on a Raspberry Pi 4. This is a monophonic program; that is, only one note is produced at a time. After these tones are processed by a combination of modular synth and pedals, the enriched monophony is further processed by a series of three sound-on-sound looper pedals to create the accumulating sonorities.

Each section of the piece was recorded in a single take as as a stereo track in Reaper. There are no overdubs and very minimal post-processing (just some EQ and leveling). Each section ends with the natural fadeout from the looper pedals after the input is over.

I may supply more detailed patch notes and diagrams at some point.
