about

Matt Samolis: Bow Chime
Dave Seidel: Implication Organ

The Bow Chime, in Matt's words: an acoustic instrument which effectively blends elements of the harmonic and drone traditions, possessing a tonal language that is remarkably complex and capable of perfect consonances as well as the most unresolved dissonances imaginable. This vocabulary far exceeds what is contained in the twelve-tone equal tempered octave, or any other tonal system defined by a finite number of scale degrees; as the language of the Bow Chime is an organic, self-governing pitch continuum.

The Implication Organ, in Dave's words: a drone-oriented microtonal electronic system, an organ that can play no more than two notes at once. Whenever two notes are played together, the IO generates chords based on the frequency ratio of these notes: combination (sum, difference, and product) tones, and intervals corresponding to Pythagorean and golden means. All sounds are produced by a Raspberry Pi 3 with Pisound running Csound, processed through a tabletop full of various analog and digital devices (including three sound-on-sound loopers in series). It is played using a small keyboard and a touch interface running on a tablet. For this performance, the IO was tuned to a meta-slendro scale.

Matt and Dave have known each other for several years. This occasion -- a small private show on September 8, 2018 at Greg Kowalski's studio in the former Lowell Insulated Wire Company building -- was the first time they ever played together. Everything is improvised except for the first 15 minutes of Part 2, which is Dave's solo-ish section and was composed in advance.

This was one continuous performance and has been broken into two parts only because of Bandcamp's size limitation for individual tracks. The two parts in sequence are suitable for gapless playback on systems that support this.
