about

PLEASE DON'T LISTEN ON A PHONE/LAPTOP UNLESS YOU HAVE GOOD HEADPHONES.

An exploration of dyadic harmony in two voices. As each note enters it overlaps the preceding note, creating liminal zones of acoustical interference that eventually resolve into pure intervals. There are a few rough edges that were inherent to the gear I was using.

Played on the Meng Qi Wingie2 resonator with sound-on-sound looping and various pedals (distortion, flanger, reverb). I created customer firmware for the Wingie2 so that I could play in just intonation using a tuning based on Terry Riley's Harp of New Albion (but with a different "minor seventh") No synths or computers were involved, except to record the performance.

This piece employs the same harmonic materials used in mysterybear.bandcamp.com/album/chthonic-resonances, i.e. four particular hexatonic (6-note) scales.

Note: this is completely different from an earlier piece I played in performance in 2011. I had forgotten that I'd already used the title Hysteresis! soundcloud.com/mysterybear/hysteresis

Update (2023-02-02): I have made a new recording of this piece, an alternate version using the Implication Organ instead of the Wingie2. I have added it as track 2.
