about

This piece developed out of a sound. I recently acquired a WIngie2, which is a resonator device. It is meant to process sound from an external source, but when put into a feedback loop, it becomes a playable instrument on its own. I added fuzz boxes into the loop. I really liked the resulting sound, somewhat reminiscent of a feedbacked electric guitar. As I played with it, eventually this piece emerged.

The musical patterns are based on a series of six-note (hexatonic) scales: Marva (from the Indian classical tradition), Prometheus (from Scriabin), Augmented, and Tritone (both from the European classical tradition). The initial Marva pattern is based on the one I used in mysterybear.bandcamp.com/album/elegy-for-harold-budd. The piece moves through the scales, articulated as slow arpeggios in different patterns layered in the looper. The slow pace allows the tones to resonate, the harmonics forming implied harmonies.

This is a live-to-stereo recording, and is a single take. Please listen on good headphones or on good speakers -- not recommended on phone or laptop speakers.
